Alternative Fashion Has a Problem With Perfect

Image
By Rose Baxter Why weird, worn, DIY and imperfect style keeps surviving every polished trend cycle. By Rose Baxter Perfect is easy. That’s the problem. Perfect can be copied, optimized, duplicated, trend-forecasted, cleaned up and sold back to everybody at the same time. Weird is harder. Worn is personal. Imperfect usually means something actually happened there. Alternative fashion has always had a strange habit of loving the exact things conventional fashion keeps trying to remove: scuffed boots, patched jackets, crooked graphics, dark imagery, ugly-pretty color combinations, horror references, handmade alterations and clothes that somehow look better after they’ve survived a few bad decisions. And every few years, somebody discovers all of this again. They polish it, package it, put it under expensive lighting and then act surprised when the people who actually live in alternative culture look at the finished version like somebody pressure-washed the personality off it. Perfect does...

Alternative Fashion Is Having a Mainstream Moment. That Doesn't Make It Mainstream.

Image
Originally published as part of Kunt Commentary by Kunts Live Forever. By Rose Baxter Something funny happens every few years. The fashion world discovers alternative people again. Suddenly black is interesting. Chains are interesting. Leather is interesting. Torn shirts are interesting. Goth is interesting. Punk is interesting. Something somebody would have called weird six months ago walks down a runway and now we're supposed to discuss its cultural significance. Apparently weird becomes fashionable on a rotating schedule. Right now, we're having another one of those moments. Gothic elements have been showing up prominently in fashion coverage, punk and rock influences are appearing on runways, rave culture is being pulled into high fashion, and London street style continues doing what London street style does best mixing things that aren't necessarily supposed to go together and making them work anyway. And you know what? I don't actually have a problem with it. N...

The Clothes We Refuse to Throw Away

Image
Originally published as part of Kunt Commentary by Kunts Live Forever. By Rose Baxter I own clothes that should have been thrown away years ago. Not donated. Not repurposed. Thrown away. They have holes in places holes aren't supposed to be. Graphics are cracked. Black shirts have faded into that weird gray color that technically stopped being black about a hundred washes ago. There are things in my closet that probably couldn't survive an aggressive washing machine cycle without becoming several smaller pieces of clothing. I'm keeping them, because somewhere along the way, they stopped being clothes. They became evidence. Some Clothes Have a History Everybody has at least one. Maybe it's an old concert shirt. Maybe it's the hoodie you've had through three relationships, four jobs and five addresses. Maybe it's a pair of boots that should have been declared legally dead years ago, but your feet have molded themselves into them so perfectly that replacing ...

Normal Was Never the Goal

Normal Was Never the Goal...And That’s Kind of the Point By Rose Baxter I’ve never understood why “normal” gets treated like a compliment. Normal clothes. Normal houses. Normal jobs. Normal opinions. Normal everything. At some point, somebody apparently decided the goal was to get through life without making anyone look twice. I’d rather give them a reason to look twice. That probably explains a lot about Kunts Live Forever. I like strange art. I like dark humor. I like things that are a little uncomfortable, a little ridiculous, and occasionally make you wonder who the hell approved them. Sometimes nobody did. Even better. Boring Is Already Overrepresented Walk through almost any store and you'll find plenty of things designed to be perfectly acceptable. Acceptable colors. Acceptable graphics. Acceptable slogans. Nothing particularly wrong with any of it. But nothing that makes you stop either. I've never wanted KLF to become another rack of clothes that could have come ...

Punk Isn’t Music. It’s Earned.

Image
Punk didn’t start with guitars. It started with people who refused to bend. Before stages. Before scenes. Before anyone argued about what counted as “real punk”… There were workers. There were soldiers. There were outcasts. And every one of them lived by the same rule: 👉 Respect isn’t given. It’s earned. 🔥 Punk Was Never Just Music Somewhere along the way, punk got boxed in. Turned into a sound. A look. A checklist. But that’s not where it came from. Punk is what happens when someone stops asking permission. It’s the decision to stand your ground. To do the work. To take the hits and keep moving anyway. 🧠 The Same Code, Different Worlds You don’t need a stage to live that. You’ll find it in places most people don’t even look: on job sites in military units in tight-knit crews where respect has to be earned in people who show up, do the work, and don’t talk about it Different backgrounds. Different paths. Different lives. Same code. 👉 You e...
